Every WorldIPTV account comes with two ways to log in: an M3U playlist URL and a set of Xtream Codes API credentials. Both give you the same 20,000+ channels and 80,000+ on-demand titles, but they work very differently under the hood, and the choice affects how fast your app loads, whether you see catch-up and VOD posters, and which apps you can use. This guide explains each format, compares them feature by feature, and gives a clear recommendation per device.
What an M3U playlist is
M3U started life as a plain-text playlist format for music players. An IPTV M3U (usually the extended m3u_plus variant) is a text file where each channel occupies two lines: an #EXTINF line carrying the channel name, logo URL, group title and an EPG channel ID, followed by the stream URL. Your player downloads the whole file, parses it, and builds a channel list.
Because it is plain text, M3U works with practically every player: VLC, Kodi, Smart IPTV, IBO Player, MyIPTV Player, TiviMate, Smarters and dozens more. The EPG is delivered separately as an XMLTV URL that you paste into the app. Your M3U and EPG links are on your playlists page.
Its limitation is that the file is static: no account status, no VOD metadata beyond a name, and catch-up only if the provider embeds catch-up tags and the app reads them.
What the Xtream Codes API is
Xtream Codes is a set of HTTP endpoints served by the provider's panel. Instead of a file, the app sends three values — server URL, username, password — and then makes individual requests: give me the live categories, give me the channels in this category, give me the movie library with posters and descriptions, give me the series with seasons and episodes, give me the catch-up archive for this channel, give me my account expiry and connection count.
The name comes from the panel software that popularized it; the original company is gone, but the API became the industry standard, implemented by essentially every provider panel and supported by every modern app: IPTV Smarters Pro, TiviMate, XCIPTV, OTT Navigator, GSE, iPlayTV, IBO Player and others.
The advantage is structure: the app loads only what it needs, when it needs it, so startup is faster and the VOD section looks like a streaming app rather than a list. Our complete IPTV guide covers how this fits into the wider delivery chain.
M3U vs Xtream Codes: technical comparison
| Feature | M3U playlist | Xtream Codes API |
|---|---|---|
| What you enter | One URL (plus an EPG URL) | Server URL, username, password |
| Data format | Flat text file | Structured JSON via HTTP endpoints |
| Initial load with 20,000+ channels | Slower; whole file parsed at once | Faster; loaded per category on demand |
| Live categories/groups | Yes (group-title tag) | Yes |
| EPG | Separate XMLTV URL, matched by channel ID | Automatic, delivered by the API |
| VOD (movies) | Listed as channels, name only | Full library with posters, descriptions, ratings |
| Series | Flat list of episodes | Organized by series, season, episode |
| Catch-up / archive | Only if catch-up tags are embedded and the app supports them | Native; shown in the guide |
| Account info (expiry, connections) | Not available | Available in the app |
| Stream format selection (TS / HLS) | Fixed by the URL you copy | App can choose per stream |
| App compatibility | Universal (VLC, Kodi, SIPTV, all TV apps) | All modern IPTV apps; not VLC or basic players |
| MAC-portal TV apps (SIPTV, Flix, Net IPTV) | Yes | Some portals convert Xtream to M3U for you |
| Refresh when channels are added | Manual re-download in most apps | Automatic |
Which format to use on each device
The rule of thumb: use Xtream Codes wherever the app supports it, and M3U only where it does not.
- Fire TV Stick, Android TV, Android boxes (Smarters, TiviMate, XCIPTV, OTT Navigator): Xtream Codes. You get faster loading, VOD with posters, and catch-up in the guide. See the Firestick and Android install guides.
- Apple TV, iPhone, iPad (Smarters, iPlayTV, GSE, Flex): Xtream Codes, for the same reasons. See the iOS install guide.
- Samsung Tizen and LG webOS (IBO Player, Smart IPTV, Flix, Net IPTV): depends on the app. IBO Player's portal accepts Xtream; Smart IPTV and most MAC-portal apps need the M3U URL. See the smart TV install guide and our Samsung and LG guide.
- Windows and macOS (IPTV Smarters Pro): Xtream Codes. For VLC, MyIPTV Player, ProgDVB: M3U plus the EPG URL. See the Windows install guide.
- Kodi (PVR IPTV Simple Client): M3U plus the XMLTV EPG URL. Kodi has no Xtream login.
Common questions about switching between them
Can I use both at once? Yes. They are two views of the same account. Each plan includes one simultaneous connection, so you can have M3U in Kodi and Xtream in Smarters, and watch on whichever you like, one stream at a time.
Is one more reliable? The video streams are the same servers either way. Xtream is more robust against channel list changes because the app fetches fresh data automatically; an M3U saved as a file weeks ago can point at stale entries.
Does M3U use more bandwidth? No. The playlist is a small text file; bandwidth is set by the stream, about 10 Mbps for HD and 25 Mbps for 4K.
Why does my M3U app show no guide? Either the EPG URL was not added, or the app's time-zone offset is wrong. Paste the EPG URL from your playlists page and check the offset setting.
Whichever format you choose, it works with every plan on our pricing page, from $12 per month with a 7-day money-back guarantee. Subscribers are responsible for complying with local laws; WorldIPTV distributes content under its own service terms.
