Around two and a half million French citizens live outside France, and most of them discover the same thing within a week of moving: the official replay apps stop working at the border, Canal+ will not sell you a subscription without a French address, and the local cable operator carries TV5 Monde and nothing else. IPTV is how French expats in London, Montreal, Brussels and Geneva keep TF1, France 2 and beIN Sports on their living-room TV. This guide explains what works, what it costs and how to set it up from abroad.

Why French TV is hard to watch outside France

The problem is licensing rather than technology. TF1, M6 and France Télévisions buy programme rights for French territory only, so their streaming platforms check the location of your connection and block anything outside it. Canal+ and beIN Sports do the same and additionally require French billing details.

The result is that a French family in Canada can usually watch the 20h news on the France 2 website, but not the film that follows it, not Ligue 1, and not the Top 14. An IPTV subscription sidesteps this because the channels are delivered as internet streams from the provider's servers, not from the broadcaster's geo-restricted platform. Subscribers are responsible for complying with local laws; WorldIPTV distributes content under its own service terms.

Which French channels expats get with IPTV

WorldIPTV's France package is the same wherever you are: the full domestic lineup, not a cut-down international feed. The full breakdown is in the IPTV France guide, but the channels expats ask about most are all included:

NeedChannels
News and the 20hTF1, France 2, BFM TV, LCI, CNews, franceinfo, France 24
Entertainment and seriesM6, TMC, W9, C8, TFX, Canal+ Séries, OCS
CultureArte, France 5, Paris Première, Histoire TV
SportbeIN Sports 1-3, RMC Sport, Canal+ Sport, Canal+ Foot, L'Équipe, Eurosport
Children (keeping French alive at home)Gulli, Piwi+, Canal+ Kids, Disney Channel France, TiJi
RegionalFrance 3 regional editions, so you can still see the news from Bretagne or Occitanie

Catch-up TV covers the previous 7 days on the main channels, which solves the time-zone problem for expats in Canada and Australia: a 21h programme in Paris airs at 15h in Montreal, so you watch it from catch-up at 20h local time. On-demand adds 80,000+ films and series, including a large French-language section.

Which countries French expats use it from

The four biggest destinations for French expats each have a slightly different situation:

  • United Kingdom: London alone has one of the largest French communities abroad. UK broadband is fast enough for 4K, and a Fire TV Stick from Amazon UK is the usual device. French channels sit alongside the UK lineup described on the UK page.
  • Canada: Quebec has French-language television of its own (TVA, Noovo, ICI Radio-Canada), but it is not French television, and the sport is hockey rather than football. Expats typically pair the France package with the Canadian channels on the Canada page. See also French and English channels in Canada.
  • Belgium and Switzerland: French-speaking Belgians and Romands already get some French channels through local cable, but usually without Canal+, beIN or the full replay catalogue. WorldIPTV's EU servers give the lowest latency here.

How to set up French IPTV from abroad

  1. Sign up for the 24-hour free trial from wherever you are; no card is needed and the credentials arrive by email within a few minutes.
  2. Install a player on your device. Fire TV Stick and Android TV: IPTV Smarters Pro or TiviMate (Fire TV guide, Android guide). Samsung and LG TVs: IBO Player or Smart IPTV (Smart TV guide). iPhone, iPad and Apple TV: iOS guide.
  3. Log in with the Xtream Codes details (server URL, username, password). If your app asks for a playlist URL instead, use the M3U link from the playlists page.
  4. Go to the "France" group and mark it as a favourite so it opens first. Set the EPG time zone in the app to your local time so the guide matches your clock rather than Paris time.
  5. If you have a paid plan, activation is complete within 5-15 minutes of order confirmation.

Support is available 24/7 in French by live chat, WhatsApp and email, so you can get help in your own language at 2 a.m. in Montreal.

Tips for the best experience abroad

  • Use a wired connection for match nights. Ethernet or 5 GHz Wi-Fi avoids the drops that 2.4 GHz suffers in dense apartment buildings.
  • Set catch-up as your default for prime time if you are more than three hours from Paris. You will never see a spoiler for a Ligue 1 result again.
  • Keep the local lineup. The subscription includes every country in the catalogue, so a French family in Toronto gets CBC and TSN on the same login; a family in Manchester gets BBC and Sky Sports.

Homesick for the 20h? Start your 24-hour free trial and watch tonight's edition from wherever you are.

FAQ

Can I watch TF1 and France 2 live from the UK or Canada?
Yes. The France package carries TF1, France 2, France 3, France 5 and M6 live, plus 7-day catch-up. The service works from any country with a stable 10 Mbps connection.
Do I need a VPN to watch French IPTV abroad?
No. The streams come from WorldIPTV's servers rather than from the broadcasters' geo-restricted platforms, so no VPN is required. A VPN can add latency and is not recommended for live sport.
Does the subscription include Canal+ and beIN Sports for Ligue 1 and Top 14?
The France lineup includes the Canal+ channels and beIN Sports 1-3, plus RMC Sport and L'Équipe, so French football and rugby are covered whichever broadcaster holds the rights that season. Subscribers are responsible for complying with local laws; WorldIPTV distributes content under its own service terms.
What happens to the time difference?
Use catch-up TV. The main French channels keep 7 days of programmes, so expats in North America can watch prime-time shows at their own prime time. Set the EPG time zone in your player app to your local zone to avoid confusion.
Can I pay from a foreign bank card?
Yes. Plans are billed in the currency shown on the country page you are viewing, and any major card works. There is a 7-day money-back guarantee on every plan.
